AI search visibility — organic GEO and paid AI advertising
AI platforms run two separate visibility systems: the organic one, where a model decides on its own to mention you inside a generated answer, and the paid one, where you buy a labelled sponsored placement next to that answer. They are bought, earned and measured differently — and one cannot be exchanged for the other.
The wall: ad spend does not buy a citation
Google and OpenAI both keep organic inclusion and paid placement strictly separated. No amount of budget in Google Ads or the ChatGPT Ads Manager makes a model cite your brand in the body of its answer, and both platforms label sponsored units explicitly — “Sponsored”, with an AI-generated context note on Google’s side. If a vendor tells you they can buy you into AI answers organically, that is not how either platform works.
Track 1 — organic GEO
Generative engine optimisation is the work of making your data readable and consistent enough that a model reaches for it when it composes an answer. A model does not read your homepage and repeat it. It reads your pages alongside third-party sources — documentation, spec sheets, test labs, review sites, installer and practitioner forums — and synthesises the consensus across them, then groups products or vendors by technical fit. You influence that by being the clearest, densest, most machine-readable source of truth about yourself, and by being described the same way elsewhere.
| What GEO requires | Where it comes from |
|---|---|
| High data density — detailed, specific, complete pages rather than marketing prose | Your content. The migration carries every page across word for word, so nothing thins out in the move. |
| Schema and knowledge-graph markup so entities and attributes are unambiguous | Written into the rebuilt project. Existing structured data is captured per page and missing schema is added during the rebuild. |
| Machine-readable pages: server-rendered copy, one H1, alt text, clean headings | Proven by the indexability check, which fetches the live site with JavaScript switched off. |
| Open-standard and specification detail — the exact terms buyers and models match on | Yours to publish. Spec sheets and compliance detail are what models group products by. |
| AI crawlers allowed: GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended | Set in robots.txt at launch, alongside llms.txt, sitemap.xml and a Markdown mirror of every page. |
| Strong third-party coverage — reviews, test labs, documentation, practitioner forums | Earned, not shipped. No migration and no ad budget can manufacture it; models weigh consensus across sources. |
GEO has high trust and long-term return, but it is slow and it cannot be bought directly. Expect months, not days: models re-read the web on their own schedule, and third-party coverage is earned. What a migration can do is remove every technical reason a model would skip you — server-rendered copy, one clear H1, alt text, structured data, an llms.txt, a Markdown mirror of every page, and AI crawlers allowed in robots.txt.
Track 2 — paid AI advertising
Both platforms now sell placements on their AI surfaces. Sitejump does not run, resell or manage advertising — this section is here so you know what the other track is and where it is bought.
| Google — Gemini / AI Mode | OpenAI — ChatGPT | |
|---|---|---|
| Ad formats | Conversational discovery ads and highlighted answers placed inside AI recommendation lists. | Sponsored units — text or cards — placed directly below the response window. |
| Creative assembly | Generated in real time. Gemini writes the copy and the explainer from your Merchant Center product attributes. | Static assets you upload: fixed headlines (about 40 characters) and body text (about 150 characters). |
| Buying infrastructure | Google Ads, via AI Max and Performance Max campaigns. | A dedicated self-serve ChatGPT Ads Manager, on CPC and CPM models. |
| Targeting logic | Deep intent and conversational context matched against structured product feeds. | Thread context and conversation memory, plus CPC/CPM keyword and intent signals. |
| Labeling | Explicitly marked “Sponsored”, with an AI-generated context note. | Explicitly marked “Sponsored”, below the chat box. |
| Effect on organic citations | None. Paid placement is separated from what the model says in its answer. | None. Paid placement is separated from what the model says in its answer. |
Both ad products are new and change quickly: formats, character limits, campaign types and availability by market are all moving. Treat everything above as orientation and confirm the current specification in Google Ads or the ChatGPT Ads Manager before committing budget. Sitejump does not run, resell or manage advertising.
How the two tracks work together
- Run both at once, for different jobs: paid buys immediate, high-intent traffic today, while GEO compounds over six to twelve months and cannot be switched on later at short notice.
- On Google, the product feed is the creative. Gemini writes the live ad copy from your attributes, so feed completeness and accuracy matter more than the keyword list.
- On ChatGPT, write copy that resolves the next step in the buying decision rather than a standard search headline — the reader is mid-conversation, not mid-search.
- The same underlying asset serves both: precise, structured, machine-readable product and service data feeds the ads and is what an answer engine quotes.
- Measure them separately. Ad platforms report clicks and cost; organic citation has no dashboard — check by asking the assistants directly and watching branded search and referral traffic.
Sitejump works on the organic and technical foundation: the migration preserves your rankings and ships the machine-readable surfaces AI answer engines read. Advertising is bought in each platform’s own manager, by you or your media agency.
